The Grand Opera Company of Philadelphia was formed in 1929 under the directorship of William C. Hammer. At the time it was one of three permanent opera companies in the city, more than Manhattan and Chicago. Renowned English conductor Leopold Stokowski performed for the company in the 1930s.
